Today at Oak Leaf Church we began a new series on religions of the world. We started with Mormonism and Michael did a great job going through the history and the founding documents of this faith. The religion was started by Joseph Smith in 1830 and was expanded by Brigham Young in Utah after the Mormon’s were forced to relocate after violence broke out in Illinois due to the practice of polygamy.
The biggest problems I see with this faith as a Christian is that they add to the Bible with a supplemental text called The Book Of Mormon. This faith also places an unusually high priority of works as the primary method of ascending into heaven which may entitle the believer to become a demi-god. The real growth for this faith came after the U.S. government outlawed polygamy and the Mormon church was able to reinvent itself into a version that would be more palatable to the masses who have been exposed to Christianity. The Book Of Mormon has been revised over 4,000 times from the original text that was “given” to Joseph Smith.
There are a lot of inconsistencies with Mormonism and the Bible which they purport to believe in. One major difference is that Mormons are polytheistic and they also believe that Jesus was only “one” of God’s sons. They also believe that works can escalate the believer to the status of presiding over their own planet in the afterlife. They believe that a council of God’s created the earth and that the fall of Adam and Eve was actually a positive because that would enable them to become God’s themselves. They also believe that are some sins for which the blood of Jesus cannot atone for. These are just a few of the theological tenants of Mormonism that are in complete conflict with the teachings of the Bible and Jesus Christ.
The Myth of Mormonism is that it is being actively marketed to people around the world as just another denomination in the Christian faith. People are being lulled into believing that by works alone they came be saved and enter into a position of deity based upon their accomplishments in this life. Mormonism is not nor will it ever be Christianity! There is only ONE GOD and he alone was the breather of life into this world. Michael reminded us today of John 14:6 in which Jesus said:
I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
We need to stand at the Fountain of Truth and make sure that people choose REAL salvation only provided through the perfect cleansing blood of Jesus Christ. The world believes this to be a narrow view but God designed this plan and I embrace HIS redemptive plan of in my life! The truth is that Jesus is the ONLY way to salvation and I invite anyone who reads this to seek God’s plan for truth in your own life!
